Filling in with large annuals will help. Marigolds and geraniums are
cheap, easy & grow big quickly and stay full of flowers. Also, some
perennials get big and lush quickly. Irises will only bloom once, but
you have those gorgeous long green leaves filling the bed as a backdrop
while the others catch up. Spring bulbs like tulips start out with their
best shows the first years sometimes. Also, look for plants that love
your climate, instead of trying to coddle plants that would rather be
somewhere else.
