Indeed... this is true and in MY area where the extreme
(percipitation/rain/snow AND temperatures of summer and winter) is the rule
and "average" means little... it is more true. My husband calls it "Mother
Nature's crop rotation" as plants go through cycles of ascendancy and decline.
I would not expect a regular garden to show this to an advantage... but I
garden on 5 acres... having planted natives and others tolerant of the
conditions for 7 + years now. It works well here. There are some "natives"
that show well in MOST conditions. A lot of these are available at nurseries
dedicated to SW plants. One of these is Plants of the Southwest
http://www.plantsofthesouthwest.com/
Another is High Country Gardens 1(800) 925-9387 (can't find the web page
address... was sure they had one) and there are other smaller and strictly
local nurseries that know their plants as well.
I do plant the more "reliable plants" closer to the house and place the
changeable types in the best location for that plant... woods or meadow etc.
Most have done well... a few have died from insects, gophers and other natural
disasters.
