Marie,
I think what 'she' is referring to is Malva, also known as Mallow. They do
resemble Hollyhocks,and I have one growing right next to my Hollyhock now.
If you see a mullein you will notice the difference. There leaves are often
fuzzy and grow from a tall spikes from the center of the plant. I think if
you visit a good garden center (one with a lot of variety) and ask if they
have Verbascum/Mullein you will see what I mean. I *do* like these plants and
there are many types to choose from.
