Re: getting family involved with the garden

Boy, I'll bet we could all tell stories about our mates' involvement or
non-involvement. My husband LOOOVVVES the garden, but his idea of
helping is
  a) Every spring, putting stakes by every plant and lily that emerges
"so no one will step on them." So we have a garden of hundreds of stakes
for weeks.
  b) Mulching over the middle of the plants regardless of my warnings
about crown rot. I think he got it last year when I threw
a (rare) true hissy fit, complete with swear words;
  c) Not moving the potted plants when he sets the sprinklers for the
lawn, thus producing overwatered pots with dying plants. This may be the
year that stops too.
   d) deadheading occasionally, and pruning trees (he's pretty good at
this).

On the plus side, he has built a gorgeous rock wall, brick sidewalks, a
lovely patio complete with arbor over it (about 10 by 20), tons of
shelves for pots & supplies, and great raised beds. He parks on the
street in summer so I can use the garage for a work area, never
complains about my plant budget, and sits with me to smell the lilies.
And he works 60 hours a week while I'm enjoying my new retirement. Do I
love this guy? You betcha! It's even okay when neighbors wander by and
remark how great "Harry's garden" is looking this year!
