Re: [Fwd: Re: Blooming ahead of time?]

Jaime,

Oh where is your sense of adventure? I, too, have a boltonia in a pot (half
whiskey barrel) along with a ginger and miscellaneous things. Granted, they
can get big, but the first year plant should be just fine, size-wise.
Besides, think how gorgeous it will look in the fall.

In the book, The Well-Tended Perennial Garden, Tracy suggests pruning the
plant back in several ways. This not only controls height thus reducing or
eliminating the need for staking and to stagger the bloom period.

1. Cut back plants by 1/2 to 2/3's in June.

2. Cut plants back by 1/3 in mid-July. If you do this, they bloom at 2 1/2
feet, not 4.

Boltonia loves full sun and will flop in partial sun. They also like well
drained soil on the lean side. Fertile soil also promotes plant flop.

Hope that helps.

Ginny
