Sandy,

You might want to be careful doing this as some twigs will root.  I did this
same thing last year and I have a wonderful tree growing (quite quickly, I
might add) exactly where I do not want it.  Didn't plant is intentionally,
but I think it's too much trouble to dig out now.

This method of staking is what the British call "pea staking".  It is a
wonderful way to recycle those prunings.
