I've never heard of peony colors being affected by one's soil.  I think it's
more likely to be the "sold to me as" syndrome.  People make mistakes and
tags fall out, plants get mislabeled, etc.  Happens a good bit, just learn
to take it in stride.  I have a number of plants that were "sold to me as"
something they were not.
