Don't forget some other reds to try and you may not have thought of:
rugosa roses (they dislike any type of chemical spraying, shrug off drought
and poor soils, and are virtually care-free -- I hate to fool with hybrid
teas), cannas, gladiolus, tigridia (Mexican tulips -- they bloom in the
summer), the annual zinnias (I know they aren't perennial, but you can't
beat the big red flowers), among others.

I love red, too, although my garden is mostly pastels.
