Anne in Chicago and others:

I don't believe that echinacea fades in the sun as much as you have
described; however, I have a small clump in one part of my border that is
partially shaded by an over-zealous crepe myrtle and those blooms are a
very deep hot pink. Now, in another part of the same border, I have a huge
clump anchoring the end in full sun. A few of those are definitely a pale
lavender, but the rest are the hot pink of the other shaded patch. I
believe it has more to do with the individual plants than the sunlight. In
this huge patch, the whole lot was self-seeded from three plants grown from
a K-Mart seed packet.

I have also noticed this year that I have a few blooms that are decidedly
different from the other blooms. The cone is flat and with a more
pronounced lime green cast. The petals are shorter and are a medium pink.
I'm watching this particular plant closely to see if it develops further.
I'm hoping that the green will stay and not turn orange. If so, I'm going
to save the seed!

What does everyone have planted with their echinacea? In one patch I have
it paired with the white version 'Alba' and pink liatris. In another
location, it is paired with black-eyed susans. Further down the border, I
have it with purple monarda and oriental lilies. Next year, I'm putting
some with ornamental grass and yellow threadleaf coreopsis.
