Hi Bill,
My V. 'Homestead Purple' did just the opposite. Mother plant overwintered
beautifully. This spring, I took rooted cuttings and planted them in
well-amended soil and they are growing half-heartedly. So it goes.
Also had a V. 'Sissinghurst' overwinter this year in our mild zone 6.
