The other thing you can do about slugs is to make sure no
mulch is directly around the hostas and sprinkle
diatenaceous earth (sorry about the spelling) around the
plants. This is made up of teeny tiny skeletons of long
dead creatures of some sort, and the slugs and snails hate
slithering over it.
