According to "The Year Round Flower Gardener" by Anne Halpin,
The flowers should be cut when half open, stripped of most of the leaves 
and placed loosely in warm water up almost to the buds.  Leave them for 
a few hours or overnight before arranging.  Recutting the stems every 
day will make th flowers last longer.
