Something that might work for you---it is not a grand plant by anymeans but 
when in bloom in the fall it is quite the show.  It is the pinecone shrimp 
plant--not sure on the exact botantical name but it is one of the 
Justicia's....the blooms are a bit different than the commonly known shrimp 
plant....they are a deep red and this one only blooms in the fall.  Easily 
rooted from cuttings to.  It is common but by the fall it is about 30" high 
and blooms profusely in shade or sun.  It remains an evergreen for me.  Dies 
back just a bit--but you always know it's there.
