www.rhs.org.uk for help with your compost inhabitants.

From experience I'd say they're friends - the worms are simply a variety of
earthworm and the flies I'd guess are fruit flies.

Your compost sounds like it needs more dry matter to solve the sogginess.
You say you're including shredded paper, but if the mouse was nesting in it
it sounds as if it needs to be mixed in more thoroughly - do you turn the
bin contents at all?
