I had some nepeta (cataria labiatae) in a pot, in my herb knot garden last
year. The cats would bee-line right to that pot when they went outside,
and managed to chew the pour plant right down to the dirt. It never had a
chance.
However, I have 4 plants of nepeta mussinii dropmore in a perennial garden,
in front of 4 David Austin 'Graham Thomas' roses (fantastic yellow
bloomer). Well, the cats just discovered these this weekend, and they are
truly making fools of themselves rolling in it. I don't mind because I
will be cutting back in a couple weeks anyway when the blooms start to tire
out. That part of the perennial garden is one of my favorites - background
against the latticed hardscape is loads of blue/purple delphiniums, then
the Graham Thomas, the nepeta, and border of golden oregano (vulgare
aureum).
Do the cats have free rein? You betcha. Can always grow more nepeta....
