Re: Germination: Globeflowers
<I have had absolutely zero results germinating the Globeflower
(trollius chinensis) seeds that I saved from last fall. I have tried
sowing the seed in flats in doors earlier this past spring and also
directly into the garden and nothing has germinated. What's the
secret?
I have had very little luck finding any information about t. chinensis
on the net. Can anyone tell me how commercial growers propagate this
plant?>
Dave:
You have had no luck because most Trollius species require cold
conditioning first to germinate. Save seed from your plants this year
and either provide the cold in your fridge this winter, or easier yet,
sow in a flat or pot & leave it in a protected spot outdoors over winter
for germination next spring. You should have abundant germination either
way.
Almost all species of Trollius I have grown (europaeus, chinensis,
laxus, acaulis, asiaticus, pumilus, yunnanensis) respond easily to this
treatment and result in healthy, robust seedlings.
GA-3 treatment (although it often eliminates the need for cold treatment
in some Trollius species), is not an optimal treatment, as the seedlings
often do not develop properly & die.
Good Luck.
