David S. MacKenzie says to space these 8-12" apart in his "Perennial
Ground Covers" book, and I fully agree. Here in zone 5b it took 2-3
years to fill in with that kind of spacing.
They do spread, but I wouldn't call them aggressive by any stretch
of the imagination. In a dry, shaded spot they're doing fine, but
anything that goes where I don't want them is easily yanked. I
have interplantings of coral bells, lungwort, and columbine that
don't suffer at all.
