Thank-you for the link to 'The Burrow' & I have my answers: the worm
things are ok & the flies are a nuisance because the heap is too wet.

Thank-you for suggesting the Henry Doubleday Site - I didn't get
answers but I was interested enough to send off for a membership pack.
Yes I do turn the heap - its in a round bin made of some heavy duty
tent groundsheet type of fabric - but not too often as its 1) way down
on my list of priorities for a garden I see only a couple of days a
week, 2) hard work to haul the thing away from its corner & tip it
out, 3) my husband is none too keen on me turning compost on our
recently and expensively brick blocked front driveway so I have to
wait 'till he's out. Hence the newspaper being lobbed in on top
without mixing & the mouse finding heaven with heating, living
accomodation and room service food.
