Re: 800 orange tulips

Heather -

In my limited experience of mail ordering plants I've been somewhat
disappointed and sometimes very pleased.

I was not dissappointed in Van Bourgondien, although my only experience has
been primarily with bulb purchases....I received exactly what I expected.

Sometimes the only way to purchase "hard to find" plants is to catalog order.
Logees has some very nice (unusually) plants and there too you get what you
expect.....for instance, I ordered some abutilions that I found "hard to
find" and in the catalog it was described as an 6-8" rooted cutting in a 1"
pot...that's what I got. One of the many I ordered looked a bit sad and when
I telephoned them on their customer service toll free number they promptly
replaced it. Those were the good experiences.

I also had ordered from Gurneys (I might not have that name exactly right)
but I received bareroot plants that never came up....they replaced them for
me but the replacements never came up either. (The customer service number
was not a toll free number like the ordering number) Then I began doing some
research and found that their catalog was full of misrepresentations in the
description of the plants and the zones. They pretty much listed every
plant as zone 4-9 when most of them were zone 5-7.

I think that you have to order from catalog companies that you know are
reliable and that you know people have been satisfied with. I probably would
have done the same with your order, espescially if I couldn't reach customer
service. I find that some of the catalogs are too pricey for the size plant
and the S & H charges unreasonable. I recommend that if you can form a
relationship with a "good" nurseryman and let him know the plants you
desire...they will find it for you if they can.

Another recommendation is finding small catalog nurseries such as Munchkin
Nursery & Garden - everything comes in the same size pot and the shipping
charges are clear (nothing hidden) and I believe that the integrity of the
"small guys" is present and they would tell you if something is going to work
for you or not.

Well - I bet you didn't want this much opinium, sorry, just got on a
role.....good luck and I hope you have better experiences.

Happy Gardening
