Hello David,
Your are exactly right on the time element to plants. Time and attention
they require. Begin with seed. Say one to two years for germination. A few
things do germinate the same season sown, but not a lot if you are in the
wildflower business. Then add anywhere from one to three more years until
first bloom. A few cases a bit more. When I sell a blooming size plant I
usually have two to three years invested and not unusual to have more when
dealing with something such as Hellebores. As you can tell, I do not force
my plants and they ride with the local climate and the seasons. No
greenhouses.
Will not try and get into all the details of the whys and wherefores, but
cost increases with each year they are potted up to the next size, watered
and fertilized, taking your losses on the ones that did not make it. Yep,
time really is money... especially when it comes to living plants.
