Re: Perennials Books

This is my first posting to the group, but I couldn't resist telling you
all about this book.

We live in USDA Zone 5 (Western Massachusetts), and when visiting our son
in San Francisco, I always spent time devouring some of his garden books.
(He's the owner of Rock & Rose Landscaping there, and they have quite a
collection of books.) I found that one book he had listed almost every
plant I could think of, complete with zones where the plants would thrive
and planting, cultural instructions, etc. It was Sunset's Western Garden
Book, and my son said, "Ma, the Sunset Book is just for Western US --
Sunset divides the west into some 20 or so different climate zones -- you
can't use this book for the East.I was out there for my birthday, and guess
what I got? Sunset National Garden Book for the U.S. and Canada. They
just published it in 1997. It has become my bible, and almost every plant
I have looked up has a listing in the book. It is ISBN# 0-376-03860-8
(paperback) or 0-3760-3862-4 (hardcover). For an all around garden
reference book, I think it can't be beat.

I find that I am not in Zone 5 according to Sunset which groups a huge
chunk of the US into this zone, but rather Sunset's Zone 38, which includes
most of Western Massachusetts (where I am) and northern coastal New England.

Sunset divides the U.S. & Canada into 45 Zones -- and lists which zones are
best for each plant.

P.S. Can't help bragging -- Rock & Rose Landscaping won 8 Gold Medals and
1 Bronze Medal in the recent San Francisco Garden Show at the Cow Palace --
