Re: Help !!!!!!!!!

No, no, Donna...not dumber than dirt...just normal humanoid.

In the first place, if you planted them in spring, they should have emerged
from dormancy and grown on for you *if* they were viable in the first
place. If they did not do this, they were probably DOA and it was not your
fault.

In the second place, if they did come up and grow and bloom and then start
to yellow and die down over a period of a few weeks, that was normal
behavior. If all of a sudden, one day, they were flopped over dead - that
is not normal behavior, I don't care how hot it got.

Most perennial poppies will sprout from root left in the soil - root
cuttings are a major propagation method with these plants, so there is a
chance that the one you dug up may have left enough root in the ground to
come back. I have my doubts about the bit left lying in the hot sun for
several days, tho':-) I also have my doubts about those who did not appear
in the first place. I would dig those up to see if there was anything
there at all. If not, you were sent dead roots which have rotted. I am
assuming, that true to form, Spring Hill sent you dry bare roots??

Do not beat yourself over your head on this! Although finding and reading
the planting instructions would have been a nice idea, I am willing to
wager that there is not a gardener on this list who has not done something
similar at one time or another. 'Tis all a part of learning about
gardening...the continuing education of the gardener:-)

Personally, I am so un-enamored by the plant material provided by Spring
Hill that I would not take it as a gift....so, I'm not convinced they are
off the hook on this one, yet.
