To all who responded with different suggestions, thank you.
Strangely enough, we have not lost any stalks since the day I wrote to this
list with my questions! Nor have we had any change in conditions, weather,
or watering practices......so I have no idea what caused this. Now the
plants are showing a lot of new basal growth and all seem quite healthy.
One of the mysteries of gardening, I guess. They have no buds, but this is
their first year, so maybe we have to wait for the big display next year......
