Sophie,
I hesitated to answer because, like many of us, I hardly think of myself as
expert enough to throw an opinion around on what may have happened. But,
if we just share experiences, that may help?
I had the same thing happen to two of 15 peonies all over the property,
where the died one stem at a time over the summer last year. But, this
year they both came up no problem (except for some nibbling from a nuisance
rabbit). And, they are blooming beautifully! Granted only a few stems,
while the others have multipled into beautiful bushes.
So, not sure what's happening to you. Sometimes you gotta bite the dirt,
yard it out, and plant another. Peonies are getting pretty cheap right now
at the nursery...
