Nancy, two ways to perk up a small town garden are: vines and
containers. Sounds like your boss has some shade if she has hostas
and azaleas. There are some great container plants, many tender ones
that would go beyond the bounds of this perennials list, and my
favorite accents for large pots are lilies. A half-dozen good sized
pots with three lilies each -- scented, later blooming, like Orientals
--
and some great colorful foliage, like silvers or purples, would go far
in providing flowers and scent, esp. in the evenings after work.
Fuschias are another good pot plant.
