Echinops is one of my favorites! You're going to love it. I started mine
bare root
and as I recall it was slow to develop. They are supposed to bloom the first
year, but mine didn't.
It was worth the wait. The flowerheads are colorful and look great for a
long time before they actually bloom. They make great dried flowers. I have
some that I cut several years ago that still look great. If you cut them
just as the flowers start to open they keep their color when dried. If you
don't cut them, the seedheads look great in the garden through fall. They
start looking scruffy when the seeds ripen. I just flick the seeds off and
the color of the seedhead shows again. Great shade of blue -- one of the
best. And a most unusual plant.
I've been tempted to plant Eryngium with Echinops. Has anybody done this?
