Leslie,
I have heuchera 'Palace Purple' in my zone 6a garden dotted in front of the
border. I must say that I love this plant, as it requires absolutely no
care from me. It is in full sun, amended clay soil, and gets nothing else
but the rain water. In full sun, the leaves are still as purple with no
greening, but I've noticed that the leaves face upwards and are more erect
than the plants that have some shading from other plants. These are more
lax, open, and bushy. I see no color differences between those in full sun
and those that are shaded in my garden. Again, I only favor plants that
require no coddling on my part, so I guess I would classify this as a
keeper. It looks great in front of my silver artemisia.
Speaking of purple-leaved perennials (er, more like burgundy), I am in love
with a lysimachia 'Firecracker' (could be 'Fireworks'...I forget) that has
small yellow blooms about the size of dimes. Normally this jewel grows on
long stems like l. punctata, but this year I decided to follow the
"Well-Tended Perennial Garden" and I pinched back the plants when they were
12" tall. The stems decided to branch out and now I have a bushy clump
that's only about 16" tall. I did not have to stake them this year and I
have more blooms than I ever had. The leaves hold the purple color very
well in full sun and the yellow blooms are truly eye-popping amongst that
dark foliage. Even though it IS a lysimachia and behaves like all
lysimachia despite the clay soil, I would recommend it to those who are
willing to put up with its roaming habits. I just pull up the new shoots
as they appear -- and they appear every week. I keep this plant near the
front of the border so it's easy to get to.
