3 years ago I planted a Palace Purple under a half dead pear tree (Duchess)
next to a Dianthus Barbatus which also shades it. It has been thriving and
blooms each year very nicely.
I hope you try moving it to a shadier location. It would be worth the
trouble B4 you give up on it. Of course, I'm sure your sister would be glad
to have it!
Also, mine is planted in hard clay (no amendments), no mulch and only
whatever rain gets through the tree. Sorry, Marge -- I guess I am very, very
lucky!
