Re: Comments please

Susan,

had the Callirohe after seeing it in bloom in a local nursery. It was
quite showy and had the most lovely dark pink flowers and fern-like
foliage. I planted it on a slope on the edge of a border because its tag
stated that it liked dry conditions with well-draining soil. It sounded
like my kind of carefree plant, so I took off the blooms so that it would
put down roots and gave it a good drink of water. Well, it never did and
it died two weeks later. I didn't know it was so fussy, but it could have
been the conditions last year, too. I was going to form a trio with blue
salvia and yellow coreopsis.

I have the Erigeron 'Azure Fairy'. I bought it because I like asters and I
love blue. This flower satisfies both criteria, although I would say that
the color is more lavender than blue -- as in most cases. It is at the
feet of a deep yellow David Austin rose ('Graham Thomas'??) and it looks
mighty fine there. As with most of my plants, it doesn't require much
care. It prefers cooler weather and its main flush is in the spring for
me. I can get sporadic blooms during the summer, but it depends on
rainfall and temperature. Here in zone 6a, it falters under the heat and
humidity. It won't die, but it won't bloom, either. I have it in amended
clay, facing west where it gets full sun after 5:00 and part-sun before
that. It has never self-sown, but it has not had mildew, either. I
understand both are troublesome in some regions.

Hope this helps you some.
