Hi Nan,

Just for clarification, the topic of peat harvesting and its environmental
impact came up on the list a couple of years ago. It was ultimately
concluded that Canadian peat moss harvested by members of the
Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss Association is gathered responsibly.
Here's what I posted about it:

      http://www.mallorn.com/lists/perennials/jul98/msg00494.html

And then the "official" message from the Canadian Sphagnum Peat
   Moss Association:

Of course, the growers will slant things to meet their needs, as will
the environmentalists... I don't know who to trust any more. :)
But it sounds like Irish peat is the danger here:

"Almost all the peat from Ireland used in gardening ... comes
from raised bogs and less than 6% of these bogs remain in a
       natural state..."

Note that it applies to "all the peat from Ireland", not Canada...

I know that you probably knew this already, but I just wanted to
clarify for the list's benefit. :)

Chris
