Re: Hosta question


I'm not an expert ( I don't even play one on tv) but I have transplanted a 
number of hosta over the years. If they are sticking up out of the ground 
you can dig 'em safely. In fact the best time as far as I can tell is when 
it's just an inch or two out and the leaves are still furled.
I have divided mine by generous application of a sharp spade, and cut a 
gallon pot sized plant in half or thirds. Being a big chicken I don't divide 
them any smaller than that, but I have seen bolder gardeners get half a 
dozen plants out of one that size. You can do the same thing with a good 
sharp knife after you've dug the plant out of the ground. Add plenty of 
compost and other organic materials when replanting and water generously 
(which is a lot more in my light sandy soil than it will be if you have 
clay) for several weeks after transplanting.

I don't say this is the best time or method, just that I have done it 
successfully.
