Re: Hosta question

Donna:
Hosta are wonderful plants. They are very easy to grow and easy to
divide. Most of them desire to be planted in the shade. A few companion
plants with similar conditions include Astilbe, Ferns, Heuchera, Impatients,
and there are many others. They are not really fussy about soil but do like
a moist environment if possible. With this in mind, they are also prone to
attract slugs and snails so you will need to monitor them. Here is how I do
mine when I dig them. I wash the soil off the roots (this in itself can be
a job, depending on how old the clump is), then I try to separate them by
pulling them apart. If they don't come apart I take a knife and cut down
through the woody part of the crown. They take abuse and don't seem to
suffer the worse for it. I am sure you will get other answers but there are
several lists that are devoted to hosta and you could learn a lot from these
people. I think they are on Yahoo. I am getting ready to leave for the
weekend but if you don't get a web site to sign up by then I will look it up
for you when I return.
Catch you later.
Jean
