You know, I wondered about that, myself. Always thought all thymes
wanted sun....figured I needed to go bone up on that one. This said,
did have one who stuck around for many years in less than full sun in
almost pure sand at the edge of a sand-laid patio...but, think it
might still be there if it had gotten the kind of sun it needed.
Shady, hard to plant places are, indeed, a challenge on many fronts,
but there are plants who actually thrive in shade - depending, of
course, upon what you're trying to achieve. Premiere no maintenance
groundcover for shade - in acidic soils and zones where it grows -
has to be Pachysandra terminalis; a true work-horse of a plant.
Of course, gardening in shade, I am fascinated by thymes and always
trying to beat the rot that sets in due to high humidity and not
enough sun...sigh...
