Re: More on pink bloodroot and double-digging

If you get a chance to go to Collectors, do by all means...have heard
only good things about that nursery from those who are near enough
to visit.

Good to hear that perseverance pays off with the double
bloodroot...am going to get that one again if my lust and memory can
coincide at the proper moment. Have the singles seeding about all
over so am not quite certain why the double took against my garden,
but it was not sufficiently happy to return.

Clay's old garden was only a few miles from me and he invited me to
his daff open house last spring - talk about incredible beds of show
daffs! Not to mention a peony border that went for hundreds of feet
and huge Azaleas...oh, so many grand plants. When he announced he
was moving in the fall, I nearly fainted - he'd lived there for
years; garden was very mature. Do not think I could have left that
garden cheerfully. Am sure you've kept abreast of the whole process
since you email each other. What a challenge, from beginning to end.
Made me look around my garden and wonder what on earth I would do
should I be faced with a move that did not feature me in a pine box
as the chief moveable object. Mind could not dwell on it for long.

My impression, re: daffs is that the extra effort is needed for show
quality, but not for the general garden type daffs. I know mine just
keep coming back and bloom away with complete neglect, but none of
them are anything out of the ordinary.

Agree, however, that all plants benefit from deep digging - well, at
least in clay soil, am not sure about sandy soils - as it permits
their roots to travel farther - and they will. You should see a
difference in your show daffs...Clay swears by double digging for
his.
