Re: plants deer LOVE
The discussion on deer has been very informative for me. I dont seem to
have a problem presently, but I always want to anticipate problems, so I
wont be surprised. I have about one half acre garden in the forest, and
when it was newly planted, we started to get quite a few deer nibbles.
So we had a 6 ft. "deer and rabbit" type wire mesh fence put in. Then
we extended it higher in places with taller deer netting (with strips of
cloth so it could be seen). So far so good, but I am aware that all
your messages indicate it might not be enough.
I am surmising that a couple of factors might be involved. The local
deer are probably mule deer, and thus smaller than in some places. And
there are lots of close-together trees, both inside and outside the
fence, thus giving not much room for the deer to run and jump. I have
heard that deer tend not to jump into small spaces, and perhaps the
trees make it look confined somehow? Anyhow, I find everyone's messages
helpful, and will be prepared if my defences are suddenly breached!
Now, if I can only identify and do something about the little animals
burrowing around underneath! I saw one of my young peonies (shoots
about 5" tall) disappear practically before my eyes last week.
