Susan, I have a spiderwort and it has never become a problem. My soil
happens to be sandy and the plant is between a 4' Rhody and a 3' Weigela so
it doesn't get a lot of sun. It is west facing situation. I think if you put
potentially thuggish plants in less than great conditions you may thwart
their thuggishness. How's that for working in two variations on the word
thug!?
I have a tomato cage permanently installed (due to laziness) atop the plant
and it grows up thru it without any help.
I live in a Bothell, a Seattle suburb so my conditions may be a bit like
yours.
