I want to put a couple D. "King of Hearts" in front of my D. spectabilis so I won't have a hole when it dies back.
I do not know how large your clump of D. spectabilis is, but if its any were near the size that some of the ones I have-no "King of Hearts' is going to take its place.
Every summer -- I think I need to call in an air strike of napalm to control a few of the plants-they grow 4 feet tall and 6 feet wide. Love them very much in the spring.
On the topic of exima and formosa hybrids-they will need some more sun that the D. spectabilis. exima likes it a little bit on the dry side while formosa likes soil moisture-but not wet.
How about trying an annual Dicentra? They will give you some height and long blooming-later in the year.
