I would agree with this statement. I have misnamed seed from swap lists from
the best organizations. Furthermore, it is usually acknowledged that
misnamed seed is being distributed.
A while back a seedex member tried every seed in a genus and found every one
to incorrectly ID'd. In fact some were weeds of bad reputation. That group
was distributing Campanula rapunculoides as Adenophora so it can easily
happen.
This is not done deliberately, it may happen from using memory to collect a
seed instead of a proper label, genuine misunderstanding and many other
things.
This spring I have a long row of Kalimeris in a cold frame that is not the
species ordered. It started to bloom last fall and I spent two years working
on what is a very inferior plant.
