Claire and Janet are correct when they say that a number of seeds that are
floating around are under false names. This is one of the reasons that I
gave up on seed swaps and exchanges, there were too many problems: the
largest being incorrectly identified seeds or/and incorrectly collected and
stored seed.
I have had much better results from the larger seed exchanges like NARGS. but
you do not always get what you think you are getting. This is true even of
commercial sources too. As an example a few years ago I sowed some seed for
Plantago major rubrifolia, they all came up and I said to myself "Hmm ...
they do not look red yet- I will give you guys some time" well some time
passed and they were still not red-it turns out the were...Plantago
lanceolata. Now this seed came from a very professional seed house-so
mistakes happen.
But I do believe that more than a few people pass off seed as something other
than what it is -- so they can get something for free from others.
The other group of people that send "bad" seed are those that do not know
what they are doing -- more than once did I receive so called seed with NO
seed in it-just dried flower parts.
"Campanula rapunculoides as Adenophora" this is not a hard mistake to
make-they look very much the same, except that the campanula is a "great"
spreader and it's very difficult to "remove" it from the soil if you want to
plant something else it its location.
Raising plants from seed has so any advantages-they out way the few problems
that one encounters, just learn to be suprised and remember the times you
received more than you expected.
Speaking of seeds, I am working on a webpage on seed sowing and would love to
here so ideas on what else I should include.

I wish to cover all the basics so that someone who is just starting out with
seeds can have some successes but I also wish to make it informative so that
those that have had a little more experience can gain from it too.
Keep in mind that I just started it so its in rudimentary form and a work in
progress as time permits.
