Well, having just landed from garden show touring, let me set the record
straight on these "old" folks. You're speaking of Larry and Anstace
Esmonde-White who filmed somewhere around 200 shows of their
ground-breaking "From a Country Garden" PBS television show. The accent is
Anglo-Irish given that they were both born and raised in Ireland. Yes, they
live in Canada - in fact, Merrickville which is just south of Ottawa and
thankfully, nowhere near Toronto. Larry, a former Indian army officer,
does indeed enjoy a drink at the appropriate time of day and if you can
keep up to Anstance (at 80+ years old) you're a more energetic person than
I. I suspect Larry made a career of it. They won several awards for the
show when in their prime (I'm pleased to say that I was the guest on one of
those award-winning occasions) :) In all, a fine couple of gardeners and
people. The garden is still being kept and visitors are invited on the
weekends.
