Hi Everybody,
I have been following this discussion with interest because I have watched
Victory Garden for a lot of years. I have seen several VG hosts "retire" -
Bob Thompson, both the hosts from VG South (sorry can't think of his or her
names) even Bob Smaus was gone for awhile, but popped up again last summer.
I think the show was due for a revamp for all of the reasons that have
already been mentioned, but the thing that bothered me the most is the
manner in which Roger Swain speaks! (I used to wonder if everyone in New
Hampshire spoke like he does). I'm not referring to his accent, but his
breathless/gasping style of delivery. I have heard him speak in person at
Hardy Plant Society and Garden Show seminars where he was much smoother and
very humorous in person. I think he is very knowledgeable and hope he will
continue to write for Horticulture magazine and other periodicals.
As for Karen Strohbeen (sp?), I really enjoyed her while she was on our
local PBS station for 2 seasons. She gives good how to information but also
addresses gardening as an art. We never got the couple from Maine here, but
we did get a cute Canadian couple with very British accents from Toronto I
think. His name was Larry and he was often waiting for the sun to "go over
the yardarm" (martini time) :).
I have only had cable for a couple of months, so all the Gardener's Diary &
Gardener's Journal shows on HGTV are new to me. So I guess I'll have a few
more to see before they look like reruns. I rather like "The Winter
Gardener" too. I wonder if he goes off the air when its spring, summer or
fall?
Speaking of Jerry Baker - the master of snake oil - he is on my local PBS
station tonight. :(

Karen Strobheen - I couldn't remember the name - thanks Cheryl. She did
around ten programs and was gone. Yes, more Karens and clematis growers,
the two Brits from upstate NY. We won't always like every program but the
focus or isn't it popular now to state your "mission" should come down to
earth.
Does anyone else think Adrian Bloom lives on a cloud?
