RE: shoe dipping and critters

Claire and all,
There are wholesale nurseries that require one to step in a pan of
disinfectant at the door to each greenhouse. Also, I have seen some that
require paper booties over your shoes and then they are discarded on the way
out. In large greenhouses where pathogens can cause the total loss of a
crop, one can't be too careful.
The nursery inspector was here a couple of days ago and spotted some
strange dark interveinal blotching on my Japanese Anemones. He identified
it as a foliar nematode that infects leaves, not roots. The treatment is
simple, just cut off the old (overwintered) foliage and burn or put in the
garbage - not the compost. Then spread a bark chip mulch to prevent rain
splashing the microscopic varmints up onto the leaves again. Interestingly,
the plants in pots were much more effected than the stock beds in my garden.
Now that I know what to look for, it will be easy to pick off the infected
leaves if it should return during the growing season.
It seems this nematode infects many perennials including lilies, begonias,
hosta, liriope, chrysanthemum, peony and ligularia too. Anyone out there
heard of this? It is a new one on me.

Ed and I in So American in January were required to walk through large
square
pans filled with foam rubber which was soaked in some pesticide or chemical
that was alway unidentified. I ruined a pair of shoes doing this. We aksed
but were never told just what was being guarded against in that muck. We
went back and forth over borders so got to do this many times. It is just a
funny thought but you could use something like that in your nursery and keep
out all the mildews and viruses and unidentified pathogens floating
around.<VBG>
