Paul,
Does this mean you have liverwort in Minnesota too? Do you mean to spray
full strength bleach directly onto the liverwort? I have tried vinegar and
that will kill both the liverwort and moss in the pots, but it makes the
soil wayyyy acidic! I saw that remedy on Rebecca's Garden when she was
visiting the New England Native Plant Society, (maybe the New England
Wildflower Society) nursery. Sorry I don't remember the organization name,
its been a few years. Claire do you know who I mean?
The natural remedy that is in the process of becoming a "product" is the
seed meal from an Oregon native plant called Meadowfoam. I don't have the
botanical name handy, but will look it up if anyone is interested. An
Oregon State University doctoral student discovered that a crop of meadow
foam grown after a crop of turf grass (a huge industry here in our green
valley) suppressed weed growth so that field burning was no longer necessary
to rid the soil of weed seeds. Somewhere along the line, he tried using the
seed meal that remains after the seeds are pressed for their oil as a top
dressing on nursery pot crops and found it controls liverwort. Maybe other
pests too, I don't know.
The problem with getting an ag company to pick up the product and market it
is that it is dirt cheap to produce and can't be patented. So I guess you
know Dow and Monsanto aren't interested. Someone told me yesterday that
there is a seed company down the valley that is selling it. Oh happy day!
So I'm going to have to make a jaunt one of these days to see if that is
true. In the meantime, I'll keep on scraping.

have you tried a light misting of bleach when the spores are being released
and the new plants are real small?
