RE: Oenanthe javanica hardiness?

I grow this along the edge of my pond to soften the edges. Just stuck
some under a rock and let it go. Oenanthe javanica flamingo is very well
behaved and does not take over everything. Likes sun to bring out the
variegated (or as us ponders say 'rainbow water parsley') colors, but
will also tolerate some shade, but the colors are not as vibrant. Has to
always be in moist soil, but tolerates up to 6" under water. Great for
pond filtration too... If the plant is happy, it will also delight you
with tiny white flowers :) It only gets about 6" high from the water
level. It dies back but returns every spring here in zone 5. Looks great
here from early spring well into the first hard frost of winter.

Be careful of Oenanthe sarmentosa. It is the non-variegated type (green)
and will take over everything. And I mean everything! Most use this in
our bio-filter and pull it out by the handfuls throughout most of the
season. (it doesn't go to the compost pile, cause it will grow there
too!) It is a great filter plant, as it does not have to be in any soil,
just need water, and has those long fibrous roots. This variety gets
much taller, about 12 inches and then flops over, unless it so crammed
in that it can't.

Fish like both of them too... good for spawning, raising their young,
and also for an afternoon snack :)
