I have not "looked" into this-but I do agree that there is something to it.  
I  have some seedlings that were started last December of a hybrid Aruncus.  
The seeds that landed near the edge of the pot started to germinate in only a 
few weeks- I was a little frustrated with them because they were so close to 
the edge that they were up on the lip of the pot and very likely to dry out 
before developing any roots.

The seeds in the middle of the pot waited another few weeks to start 
germinating.
