<<Hello Gale,
What are you using as companions for your oak leaf hydrangea.... or what
*will* you be considering? In the March/April issue of Fine Gardening that
just came out there is photo of my oakleaf with Spiegelia marilandica,
Indian Pink or Pink root. Cream white of oak leaf blooms and brilliant red
of Indian pink really makes a show in May. In fact I use oakleaf either as a
companion or background most of the year favorite perennials and bulbs.

Wow, Gene, that sounds like a dynamite combination - Indian pink grows wild around here too. But in high shade of oak trees etc. My situation is such that I hadn't even thought of underplanting the hydrangea. The background of it is some Leyland cypresses that give pretty dense shade - needless to say, these weren't my idea either.
