Hello Gale,
My oakleaf has been in the garden long enough that other plants have had time to seed around it. Below and around the oakleaf are now woodpoppies, blue wood phlox, Jacob's ladder, Solomon's seal and Jack in the pulpit. All of which would handle the heavy shade.

Wow, Gene, that sounds like a dynamite combination - Indian pink grows wild around here too. But in high shade of oak trees etc. My situation is such that I hadn't even thought of underplanting the hydrangea. The background of it is some Leyland cypresses that give pretty dense shade - needless to say, these weren't my idea either.
