I think your remembrance garden is a wonderful way to honor your special pet..
I went to the vg pathfinder site, to see what they had.. came up with tiger flower, a summer blooming bulb.. you can see it at : http://pathfinder.com/vg/Magazine-Rack/Sunset/1995/February/ggtigerflowerbulbs.html
Also you might consider plants with the word dog: dog toothed violent immediately comes to mind.
And another thing you might consider planting a rosemary, which is the herb of remembrance, if your garden is in a fairly sunny spot.
