There's been some discussion lately about sweet peas. The
perennial vine Lathyrus latifolia is not fragrant, unfortunately, but
its pink and white flowers are charming and it seems to be easy to grow.
As for annuals, the huge beautiful sweet peas in all colors that
the British grow in profusion are not possible for those of us in the
muggy humid Midwest. However, this past summer I ordered some heirloom
sweet peas from Shepherd's--the earliest annual sweet peas grown by
monks in Sicily, I believe, and they did fairly well. They were
extremely fragrant, BTW.
