winter are, especially assuming that we have a mild spring, on
perennials, shrubs, trees, seeds in the ground, etc.? seems like it
ought to have a bunch of effects. would bad insects that might otherwise
get killed survive? might we not have to prune back our buddleias?

Steve, I saw my first mosquito Sunday and he/she was hungry. Also the moles
have been extremely active the last couple weeks. So I think we'll definitely
have a pest problem due to the mild winter, but the plants may also be very
strong and able to withstand the attacks. My buddleias never stopped growing,
when usually I lose a couple to winter temperatures here in our Zone 6a (by
the map anyway). they could use pruning to shape them, but I hate to cut off
active growth.
